TSG 3 Discusses Climate Adaptation and Marine Protection at 22nd Meeting in Corfu
The 22nd meeting of the EUSAIR Thematic Steering Group for Pillar 3 – Environmental Quality and the event Accelerating climate change adaptation in the Adriatic-Ionian Region was held on April 7-9, 2025 in Corfu, Greece, under the Greek Presidency.
Chaired by Mitja Bricelj, PhD, co-coordinator for Pillar 3 from Slovenia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning, the meeting gathered representatives from nine EUSAIR countries, the European Commission, the EUSAIR Facility Point Lead Partner, and the EUSAIR Youth Council.
Key discussions centered on a new flagship project proposal focused on climate change adaptation and disaster risk prevention. The project will integrate River Basin Management (RBM), Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), and Marine Spatial Planning (MSP). Another major topic was the preparation for the upcoming 10th EUSAIR Forum (6–7 May 2025 in Crete), where TSG 3 will present a session on the protection and sustainable development of the Adriatic-Ionian marine environment.
The meeting also included a review of recent capacity-building activities, collaboration with UNEP/MAP for the 50th Anniversary of the Barcelona Convention, and an update on projects funded under the first IPA ADRION call. TSG 3 members emphasized the importance of enhancing cross-sectoral synergy in the region, particularly in climate adaptation and marine protection.
Additionally, the meeting saw the approval of the Annual Progress Report for 2024 and an updated TSG 3 Activity Plan for 2025. The event concluded with an exchange of ideas on strengthening cooperation with the EUSAIR Youth Council and further advancing regional environmental goals.
