SMART ERA Launches Open Call for Innovators to Advance Sustainable Rural Transformation in Europe
We are pleased to share an exciting opportunity under the SMART ERA project – SMART community-led transition for Europe's Rural Areas. This EU-funded initiative empowers rural communities to embrace sustainable transitions and foster cooperation across European regions, addressing socio-economic, environmental, and demographic challenges.
SMART ERA brings together 25 partners from 10 European countries, including EUSAIR members, to revitalize rural landscapes through smart innovation packages. Its mission is to combat depopulation, attract talent and investment, and strengthen rural areas by reducing vulnerabilities. The project has been highlighted by the European Commission in its 2025 report on EU macro-regional strategies as a good practice example.
The 1st Open Call for Pilot Add-ons is now open, inviting up to 11 innovators to address key rural challenges in six dynamic Pilot Regions. Successful applicants will receive:

Up to €60,000 in equity-free funding

A tailored 9-month Mentoring Programme with expert guidance and technical support
The call is open until 4 November 2025 at 15:00 CET. Proposals are welcome from startups, SMEs, and other legally registered entities ready to make an impact on rural innovation.
