Strengthening Digital Connectivity in the Adriatic-Ionian Region: "Digitalising the Road Last Mile for Ports and Multimodal Freight Terminals. Data sharing and interoperability for efficient freight flows"
On 25 March 2026, Trieste will host the joint event “Digitalising the Road Last Mile for Ports and Multimodal Freight Terminals. Data sharing and interoperability for efficient freight flows”, organised by the Port Network Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea in cooperation with the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Interporto di Trieste, and held under the auspices of the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR).
The event will bring together representatives of European institutions, national ministries, regional authorities, ports, multimodal freight terminals, road infrastructure managers and logistics operators to address one of the key challenges for the Adriatic–Ionian macro-region: improving the efficiency, reliability and sustainability of road freight flows at TEN-T core nodes.
As traffic volumes increase and supply chains become more complex, digital solutions are essential to optimise truck entry and exit procedures, reduce congestion at access points and enhance interoperability between transport modes. The conference will combine policy-level contributions with operational best practices, including keynote speeches on public investments driving digital transformation and concrete experiences such as the Port of Hamburg’s integration of real-time slot management, intelligent traffic control and interoperable data interfaces.
A dedicated session will highlight the synergy among European and national funding instruments, presenting insights from ACCESSMILE (Interreg Central Europe), MERIDIAN (CEF Transport), MILEPORT and PRESPORT (Interreg Italy–Croatia) and ELODIE (Italian Recovery and Resilience Plan). By fostering cross-fertilisation among projects addressing similar challenges in different geographical areas, the event will demonstrate how coordinated investments can generate added value and accelerate digital transformation across corridors and logistics nodes.
From a macroregional perspective, the conference provides a platform for knowledge exchange and policy dialogue among EUSAIR stakeholders. It contributes to Pillar 2 “Connecting the Region” and aligns with the EUSAIR flagship initiative “Green and Smart Port Hubs”, by promoting interoperable digital systems, enhanced data sharing and coordinated governance models that strengthen ports and multimodal freight terminals as sustainable and intelligent gateways across the Adriatic–Ionian area.
The event will be organised in a hybrid format, allowing participation both in person and online. The working languages will be Italian and English, with simultaneous interpretation provided.
