The Republic of Slovenia is a sovereign parliamentary democratic republic located at the crossroads of Central and Southeastern Europe. It gained independence in 1991 and has since developed into a stable, highincome economy and an active member of the European Union (EU) and the euro area. Slovenia joined the EU on 1 May 2004, the Schengen Area on 21 December 2007, and adopted the euro (€) as its official currency on 1 January 2007. The capital and largest city is Ljubljana, a cultural, economic, and political centre. Slovenia’s EU membership supports its integration into European markets and policies, fostering regional cooperation across the Adriatic-Ionian area.
