Located at the crossroads of Europe, the Mediterranean and the Balkans, Greece plays a key role in fostering cooperation and connectivity across the Adriatic–Ionian macro-region. As one of the founding members of the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR), Greece actively contributes to strengthening regional integration, sustainable development and shared prosperity among the countries of the Adriatic and Ionian seas.
With a strong maritime tradition and centuries-long cultural connections with neighbouring countries, Greece views macro-regional cooperation as an essential instrument for addressing common challenges and unlocking new opportunities. Through EUSAIR, the country promotes dialogue, collaboration and practical solutions in areas such as blue growth, connectivity, environmental protection and sustainable tourism. These priorities reflect both the natural characteristics of the region and the shared commitment of participating countries to balanced and sustainable development.
Greece participates actively in all governance levels of EUSAIR, from technical working groups to high-level political dialogue. This broad engagement allows the country to contribute expertise, share best practices and support the implementation of concrete projects that bring tangible benefits to communities across the macro-region. Greek institutions, regional authorities, universities and stakeholders are involved in numerous cross-border initiatives that strengthen innovation, promote knowledge exchange and enhance regional resilience.
A central pillar of Greece’s contribution to EUSAIR is its strong commitment to the blue economy. As a country closely linked to the sea, Greece supports initiatives that encourage sustainable management of marine resources, maritime innovation and the development of “blue skills” that prepare the workforce for emerging opportunities in maritime sectors. Such initiatives help strengthen coastal economies while ensuring the long-term protection of marine ecosystems.
Greece also plays an important role in strengthening the political dimension of macro-regional cooperation. The country has assumed the Presidency of EUSAIR twice, most recently for the 2024–2025 period, demonstrating its continued dedication to advancing the Strategy’s objectives. During its presidency, Greece worked to reinforce regional cooperation, encourage dialogue with European institutions and highlight the importance of cohesion, green transition and support for the European integration of Western Balkan partners.
Through these efforts, Greece contributes to building a more connected, sustainable and resilient Adriatic–Ionian region. By fostering partnerships among governments, local communities, businesses and civil society, the country helps translate the shared vision of EUSAIR into concrete actions that improve quality of life, promote innovation and strengthen regional solidarity.
For Greece, participation in EUSAIR is not only a policy framework but also a commitment to cooperation and mutual progress. By working together with its regional partners, Greece aims to ensure that the Adriatic–Ionian macro-region continues to evolve as a dynamic space of stability, opportunity and sustainable growth for present and future generations.
