The European Parliament, Committee on Regional Development, published on 1 December 2017 a report on the implementation of EU macro-regional strategies. In relation to EUSAIR, the report points out the environmental challenges, but also opportunities such as capactty building and institutional strengthening that the strategy can build upon to achieve a better implementation.

Since the start of the macro- regional endeavour, research has played a crucial role in shaping a discourse and a practice that can be considered as a completely new feature of EU integration and provides an innovative approach towards cooperation and territorial cohesion.

The study of the European Commission on macro-regional strategies and their links with Cohesion Policy has been finalised. Check the final report covering all four strategies as well as the EUSAIR-specific data and analytical report, containing the extensive data collection and analysis on which the report is based.

Based on a description and analysis of the state of each macro-region, the study analyses the achievements of each macro-regional strategy, the need and macro-regional relevance of the chosen (sub)-objectives and a review of achievements in relation to the objectives, as well as links to the European Structural and Investment Funds.
It also analyses the role of macro-regional strategies in coordination of EU policies and programmes, the effectiveness of cooperation and the relevance of macro-regional strategies for achieving future challenges and objectives. Finally, the report provides an analysis of the implications of the macro-regional approach for Cohesion Policy and recommendations for the future.

Joint Research Centre is organizing Macro-Regional Innovation Week - Knowledge and Technology Transfer in Macro-Regions, on 24-26 January 2018 in Ispra (Italy).

The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) is organizing a Regional Stakeholder Conference on Blue Economy which will take place in Naples (Italy) on 29-30 November 2017.

The conference conference is highly relevant to the EUSAIR stakeholders and implementers as there is both a thematic and geographic overlap.

In the framework of the  Conference,  on the 29th  November a Brokerage Event will be  organized,  within the activities of Enterprise Europe Network –BRIDGeconomies_2 Consortium and in collaboration with the Enterprise Europe Network Maritime Sector Group.

The Slovenian EUSAIR Facility Point project partner in cooperation with the Government Office of the Republic of Slovenia for Development and European Cohesion Policy, the contact point Europe Direct Koper – Capodistria and other organizers is organizing the event titled Energy and Transport Potentials in Slovenia for spatially coordinated macroregional development, which will be held on Friday, 27 October 2017 in Koper.

The event will be held in Slovene language.

The purpose of the event is to connect stakeholders from the energy and logistics sector in Slovenia and link them to the Slovenian Smart Specialisation Strategy priorties in a way that would enable the development of the above mentioned potentials in a wider macroregional environment through European programs (e.g. Interreg, Horizon 2020, etc.).

The deadline for applying to the event is Wednesday, 25 October 2017.

The Observatory on Tourism in the European Islands – OTIE in partnership with the European Economic and Social Committee (CESE) is inviting you to join the event which will be held on 27 November 2017 in Brussels.
At this occasion the »ISLANDS ECONOMY WORKING GROUP« a working group focusing on islands economy will be instituted, which will explore the outputs of research carried out by the Observatory in the field of island economy, in the perspective of coinceiving future strategic actions for their growth.

On the 9th of October 2017, a subsidy contract for the implementation of the EUSAIR Facility Point strategic project entered into force. The contract was signed between the Emilia Romagna Region, Italy, acting as managing authority of the Adriatic-Ionian Transnational Cooperation Program Interreg ADRION 2014-2020 and the Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy, Slovenia, acting as lead partner of the EUSAIR Facility Point strategic project .

The contract serves as a legal reference for the implementation of the project. The EUSAIR Facility Point is now formally entrusted to manage and coordinate supporting activities for the implementation  of the EU macroregional strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian region (EUSAIR strategy).

The EUSAIR Facility Point is a project partnership of ministries from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia, where the Government office for Development and European Cohesion Policy acts as a lead partner and the Municipality of Izola as  project partner. The duration of a project is from 2016 until 2022.

The aim of the project  is to strengthen the institutional capacity of public authorities for efficient coordination and implementation of the EUSAIR strategy. The support is targeted to the organization of events, development of strategic project concepts and identifying funding opportunities, development of a virtual platform for the exchange of information and ideas among stakeholders, communication and setting the framework for monitoring and evaluating of the EUSAIR strategy.

The European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) launches a call to foster a "Sustainable Blue Economy". With a total budget of € 14.5 million, the call will accelerate the implementation of the European maritime policy and the deployment of the blue economy across Europe and in the Mediterranean. ​

The Sustainable Blue Economy call comprises 4 strands to support innovation and bring research results closer to the market as well as increase capacity building and networking for a sustainable use of our sea basins. In this way, the call will support sustainable job creation, innovation and entrepreneurship in the blue economy.

For more detailed information check the extract from the amendement of the Work Programme 2017. For Strands 3 and 4, the non-EU countries are ligible to apply.

The EMFF 2017 Info Day will be held on 9 November 2017,  9:00 -17:30 in Borschette Conference Center, Rue Froissart 36,  Brussels.

The Info Day will be opened by Karmenu Vella, Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. It will be open to all sea basins surrounding the EU coasts and will target a wide range of stakeholders.

The day will mark the launch of one of the Commitments of the European Union at the global conference Our Ocean 2017 in Malta and is a direct step to concrete action for a sustainable Blue Economy.

The 6th EUSAIR Governing Board meeting will be held on 25-27 October 2017 in Ancona, Italy.

The Governing Board is the EUSAIR coordination body gathering the National and Pillar Coordinators designated by the 8 participating countries, representatives from European Commission and the other EU institutions, as well as representatives of the Permanent Secretariat of the Adriatic and Ionian Initiative.

More information on the outcomes of the Governing Board meeting will be published soon after the meeting.
